Every Wednesday, These CPAs Trade in Their Calculators for Ice Cream Scoops at the Hospital

MELVILLE, N.Y., Sept. 13, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- On any given Wednesday at Steven and Alexandra Cohen Children's Medical Center on Long Island, CPAs from the accounting firm Nussbaum Yates Berg Klein & Wolpow, LLP (NYBKW) put on aprons and scoop out a little bit of welcome cheer to the many children at the hospital's adolescent and pediatric wards. Sponsored by the NYBKW Charitable Foundation, this special outreach moves even the toughest souls out there.

"Nothing compares to brightening the day of a child, especially a child that is suffering," said NYBKW Charitable Foundation President, Barry Berg, CPA. Visibly moved, Berg recounts how recently the mother of a seriously ill child stopped the ice cream toting CPAs in the hall to thank them for making her child's day. "Sometimes it's the littlest things that make the biggest difference," she tearfully told them.

Helping out and caring for others runs in these CPAs' veins. From jeans days to charity walks and runs, from collecting and distributing toys and coats to handing out ice cream, just how did these Long Island accountants become so philanthropic?

Mr. Berg explains, "At our accounting firm, we are a group of professionals serving our clients day in and day out. We realized that behind the numbers and spreadsheets, we were really all about C-A-R-I-N-G. Plain and simple. We care about our clients. We care about our staff. We care about our community. So when we formed the NYBKW Charitable Foundation, it was a natural extension of our commitment to caring. In fact, our mission statement is to improve the welfare of men, women, and children, especially on Long Island. The theme for our foundation is 'NYBKW Accountants that Care.'"

Which leads us back to the ice cream. Mr. Berg wanted the children to have the complete ice cream experience, so he went all out. He purchased an ice cream vendor's costume, complete with a white hat, white jacket, and bow tie. "Don't get me wrong," laughed Mr. Berg, "the kids would love it just because it's ice cream. But when they see my outfit, it makes it that much more memorable. To bring a smile to the faces of hospitalized children, and their parents, if even for a moment, is absolutely priceless." With a playful grin, Mr. Berg continued, "A part of me also hopes that they will think that this is the way all CPAs dress."
