FAC Speaks Out in Support of Newly Announced Privatizing Tax System
MINEOLA, N.Y., Feb. 9, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The Fair Assessment Committee ("FAC") a consumer advocacy group comprised of residential taxpayer representatives, announced they are in full support of the new Nassau County property tax settlement program.
Although still in development, the program promises to use a more timely and efficient method to settle cases and will use outside appraisers who are experienced with the process. "Taking tax assessment review out of the courts will result in an optimal outcome for all interested parties and will save the County millions of dollars in tax refunds", says Jonathan A. Stein, FAC spokesperson. "Now only the most difficult cases to settle will have to go to court. Best of all, it will be beneficial to the taxpayer to reduce their tax bills before they are paid."
Previously property tax appeals were heard in court, in small claims assessment review proceedings (SCAR). If the homeowner paid a higher tax bill before a reduction in assessment was made, the homeowner was due a refund. The new settlement program would be administered by the County Attorney's office and put an end to the County's abusive anti-homeowner, "no settlement - no merit" policies at the SCAR level and will save the County millions of dollars in tax refunds and overhead.
Members of FAC applaud the efforts of County Executive Mangano in establishing these significant reforms to the review process.
Members of FAC are experienced professionals in residential appraisal and tax grievance procedures and are prepared and will continue to vigorously represent clients in many different forums- New York State Supreme Court, Small Claims hearings, negotiations, at hearings on assessment reform, and working closely with County officials to improve assessment practices and review procedures.
