FCC Promotes Use of Signal Boosters

DALLAS, July 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 1, 2013 the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) implemented new technical standards for cellular signal boosters. Although the Report and Order actually promotes their benefits, numerous negative and misleading articles and blogs persisted on the internet for months prior to its implementation.

Headlines such as "FCC Shuts Down 2M Signal Boosters" or "Looming Deadline for Cellular Signal Boosters" were common on search engine pages. But according to one industry expert, these gloom-and-doom scenarios are far from the truth.

"It is simply not true that signal boosters have been banned," said David Jones of UnwiredSignal.com, a top provider of signal booster kits since 2001.

"The Order actually promotes the use of cellular signal boosters, and states that without their use, millions of people in America would be without the use of cell phone and wireless broadband internet."

It even gives specific examples of how signal boosters can extend coverage in fringe areas. The Order reports one study in which a signal booster extended coverage by eight miles.

According to Jones, the Order in part, states that:

"Robust signal boosters can bridge these gaps and extend coverage at the fringe of service areas. Signal boosters are particularly useful in rural and difficult-to-serve environments such as hospitals. Signal boosters can also public safety communications where wireless coverage is deficient or where adequate communications are blocked or shielded.   In short, because signal boosters represent a cost-effective means of improving our nation's wireless infrastructure, the rules we adopt today should lead to more robust service for many Americans at home, at work, and on the road."

It also quotes the National Transportation Board's (NTSB) recommendation that all busses should carry cell phone signal boosters. This recommendation was issued by the NTSB because of a buss wreck in a fringe area where emergency care for the injured riders was delayed for over thirty minutes because there was no cell phone signal there. The NTSB found that cell phones would have worked there if a signal booster had been available for use.

The FCC does require that signal boosters be registered with your service provider prior to use. If you already have one in use, it must be registered, also. Approval from service providers is not needed, however, as "blanket approval" has been given by all major service providers. "Ignore the blogs and articles which claim that signal boosters are outlawed, Jones says. "Check with the source if you have doubts, which is the FCC. If you are already using a cellular signal booster, you just need register it.  If you need a signal booster to get cell phone or faster internet connections than you already have, get one. Just confirm that it is FCC approved."
