Fenix West: Premium candles delivered at half price

Husband/wife startup seeks to burn up candle industry

PORTLAND, Ore., Nov. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Designer candles are overpriced. Fenix West founders Phil and Carla Bunting know firsthand because their candles are made in the same factory with the same premium fragrances and ingredients as designer brands sold in high-end retail stores and boutiques at more than twice the price.

"It cost how much!?" Carla recalls her husband asking in disbelief after spending $70 on a designer candle. "Seriously, how much could it actually cost to make a candle?"

Their curiosity led them to Los Angeles and one of the most established candle manufacturers in the country. After researching the $2 billion-a-year candle industry, the couple began plotting the type of disruptive company they felt had been missing. Their goal: To provide premium candles at a fraction of the price along with the convenience of scheduled monthly deliveries.

"We set out to create a candle that would rival the quality and fragrances of designer brands," Phil said. "But we never imagined our candles would be made in the same factory, with the same ingredients, by the very same hands."

Drawing inspiration from online direct-to-consumer brands Warby Parker and EVERLANE and from monthly subscription services such as BIRCHBOX and Dollar Shave Club, Phil and Carla created Fenix West. The start-up company releases and delivers a new scented candle each month to its members for $35 per candle including shipping.

With scheduled monthly deliveries, Fenix West members can burn candles daily knowing their next candle delivery is right around the corner.

"Consumers appreciate transparency in both pricing and manufacturing," says Phil, an entrepreneur who owns and operates successful e-commerce websites Magnetuck and MS&Co. "They find value in not just quality, but also convenience. Fenix West delivers both."

Each Fenix West candle is hand-poured in Los Angeles using the highest quality soy-based waxes. Compared to more common 6.5-ounce candles, Fenix West's 9-ounce candles are nearly 40% larger, providing a generous 50-60 hour burn time. Each candle is made with at least a dozen individual scents, emitting a sophisticated fragrance for the enjoyment of men and women.

While each new release is unique to a particular month or season, all Fenix West candles begin with base notes such as sandlewood, cedarwood, vetiver or oak moss. This gives Fenix West candles a complex natural scent. While a winter month's fragrance may have top notes of chestnut, vanilla, leather and fir needle, summer candles might include brighter notes such as jasmine, rhubarb, lavender and spearmint.

For every candle purchased, Fenix West will donate a book to a child in need through the non-profit Gift of Knowledge. Donated books are used for children's libraries, schools and orphanages both in the U.S. and abroad. "As a school teacher and mother of two, education and literacy is something I am very passionate about," says Carla. "We're excited that Fenix West will help provide literacy support to students who need it most."
