Literature Topics and Authors Speak to Politics, History, Food, Sex and Videotape
Timely, Entertaining, Amusing and Informative - A Veritable Literary Buffet
BOCA RATON, Fla., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The 2010 Festival of the Arts BOCA literary series' authors speak of issues that are central to us all - history, politics, sex, and YES! food. Indeed at times these topics seem to intermingle. Not necessarily so in our lectures, but still the variety of themes to be discussed not only offer something for every taste, but allow literary lovers to savor and sample a bit of each.
Get ready to be amused and enlightened. Starting on March 6th, renowned gourmand Dr. Albert Sonnenfeld will share his passion for food and film during a lecture entitled "Sex, Food and Video Tape." Dr. Sonnenfeld who maintains that the most erotic movie scenes in history contain no sex at all, just food and conversation, will treat audiences to his well-known brand of wit as he illustrates points utilizing great scenes from well-known movies. While he indeed will treat audiences to a side dish of amusing observations, Dr. Sonnenfeld is the truest of food scholars. Date/ time: March 6th at 4 PM.
This year's Festival also welcomes Dr. Noel Riley Fitch. A superlative raconteur whose biography of the ultimate American gourmand, Julia Child, is perhaps the truest snap shot of a woman who changed the way Americans view food. Her lecture "An Appetite for Life: Writing the Story of Julia Child," is a veritable voyage through time that includes anecdotes of meetings by the two women, providing insight into the building blocks that made this fabulous biography possible. For those who loved the recent "Julie and Julia," this is a step well above, as it captures the spirit of a transcendental American figure whose appetite for life went well beyond the kitchen. Date/ time: March 7th at 4 PM.
Politics and current events are next on the menu, as the illustrious and sometimes controversial New York Times columnist David Brooks joins us for a timely lecture entitled, "Political Outlook." In the midst of what many deem a tumultuous political environment, midterm elections and a country literally split in two, Mr. Brooks will thoughtfully reflect on the present and future. Often identified as a conservative, Mr. Brooks nonetheless is far from predictable in his opinions. He has both praised President Obama and criticized President Bush and does dish it out to both sides, preferring to remain true to his convictions. Date/ time: March 7th at 7 PM.
What better way to put current events into perspective than by venturing back into history. The next two authors are a power couple who will be present throughout the entire Festival in their role as distinguished authors in residency.
Acclaimed, Pulitzer Prize winning historian Dr. Doris Kearns Goodwin has brought history alive for millions through such books as, Wait Till Next Year, No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The American Home Front During World War II, and Team of Rivals, The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Her must-not-miss lecture, "The Art and Craft of Biography: Living with LBJ, JFK, FDR and Lincoln," is a veritable voyage through history. Not only will history come alive for the audience, but Dr. Goodwin will transport them into the secret of her mastery. Date/ time: March 8th at 7 PM.
As a final course, we have a master of the pen in his own right, advisor to Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and the architect of such memorable speeches such as the "Great Society," Dr. Richard Goodwin. Doris K. Goodwin will take us behind the scenes of both a tumultuous and magical period as she interviews her husband about his experiences in a lecture/exchange entitled "Inside the White House with JFK, Jackie, Bobby and LBJ." Travel back to the era of Camelot, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the civil rights movement and more. Date/ time: March 13th at 4 PM.
Literature prices range between $25 and $50. Tickets can be purchased by going online at: www.FestivalOfTheArtsBoca.org or by calling toll free 1-866-571-ARTS.
