FEV to Support Chrysler, EPA Hydraulic Hybrid Project
FEV, Inc. will engineer hydraulic hybrid propulsion system for Chrysler minivan
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., Jan. 20, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FEV, Inc., (FEV) a leading developer of advanced powertrain and vehicle technologies, was recently recognized as an engineering services supplier to a joint Chrysler/EPA initiative to integrate a hydraulic hybrid propulsion system into a Chrysler minivan. The program was announced by Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne and EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson on January 19, 2011 at the EPA National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
With the potential to be one of the world's most efficient and cost-effective powertrain technologies, Administrator Jackson stated that the hydraulic hybrid system could increase overall fuel efficiency 30-35 percent, and up to 60 percent in city driving, while reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent. By increasing efficiency, emissions of other harmful pollutants are also reduced.
A hydraulic hybrid system developed and patented by the EPA has been integrated into a variety of commercial vehicles, such as delivery trucks, refuse collection trucks and yard hostlers. FEV was a key partner in the development and integration of the system into a number of test vehicles, providing such services as design, analysis, simulation, and fabrication of the hydraulic drive unit.
For the Chrysler/EPA project, FEV will support the engineering of a hydraulic hybrid system on a smaller scale, and the integration into a vehicle designed for comfort as well as family utility.
"We are very pleased to be a part of this program," said Gary Rogers, president and CEO of FEV, Inc. "We feel that this can be a viable technology to increase fuel efficiency in larger light-duty vehicle applications, including minivans, SUVs and pick-ups. We look forward to addressing technological challenges to make this yet another tool in the arsenal of fuel saving options."
