Find the Right Attorney to Handle Your Government Security Clearances
SAN DIEGO, July 22, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- There is merit to the saying "You get what you pay for." On the other hand, paying top dollar doesn't necessarily guarantee favorable results.
Following are five tips from the security clearance attorneys at Security Clearance Law Group to follow when seeking legal help in obtaining DOD security clearance or navigating the rebuttal process when an applicant has received a statement of reasons response.
1. Consider a veteran.
"Those requiring security clearance tend to be in the military or are government employees or contractors, so hiring a lawyer with military experience means they understand the process and the importance of getting clearance quickly," said John Griffith, who served in the U.S. Army.
2. Ask about experience. Hire a professional who is qualified to help should clearance be denied. Ask how many Statement of Reasons cases he/she has handled in the past year, and whether appeals were successful. Ask who will prepare the case. Ask which federal agencies the attorney has dealt with on security clearance cases.
3. Ask about case-related costs.
"Cost is important in this situation," said security clearance attorney, Griffith, whose firm posts fee schedules online.
Top secret security clearance applicants can ask their attorney what the applicant can do to help keep costs manageable. Many firms charge high fees that aren't necessary, Griffith said. Shop around.
4. Ask about the likelihood of obtaining a security clearance. A good attorney can determine if pursuing an appeal is worthwhile.
5. Military personnel should consider a private attorney.
"Military attorneys are government employees," Griffith said. "They're not always invested in the client as much as a private attorney."
