CARDIFF, Wales, January 6, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

Sometimes an historical building can provide many interesting challenges and so it was when Cardiff based firm Original CAD Solutions recently worked on the fire plan drawings for iconic Grade 1 listed Ashton Memorial, a beautiful historic monument and folly, located in Williamson Park, Lancaster County. A popular visitor attraction, standing at 150ft tall, the landmark can easily be seen from the nearby motorway and has superb views of the countryside across to Morecambe Bay.

Built between 1907 and 1909, this Edwardian Baroque was commissioned by millionaire industrialist Baron Ashton (famous for producing lino) in memory of his second wife. It was designed by John Belcher & was built at a cost of £87,000 which equated to approximately £4.5m in today's money.

Original CAD Solutions were commissioned by Lancaster City Council to carry out a building survey and to provide professional Fire Zone and Evacuation Plans for the memorial. Senior CAD Technician, Geraint Brace said: "This building was extremely interesting to survey and to work on. The building geometry is based around a central octagonal shape and has a high degree of symmetry which is unusual and very different to modern buildings".
