Florida Overturns International Driving Permit Requirement for UK Travellers
LONDON, April 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --
The US state was accused of quietly introducing the law and failing to alert travel companies, leaving car hire customers confused
A new law in Florida which banned UK travellers from driving a car in the State unless they held an International Driving Permit (IDP) has been overturned. The introduction of the legislation caused much confusion amongst both holidaymakers and car hire companies as British travellers have previously been able to present just their UK license.
Andy Hemmington of http://www.comparecarhire.co.uk says: "Fortunately when problems arose with the law and customers were refused car hire for failing to present an IDP, in addition to their UK license, the law was withdrawn. However, this has highlighted how essential it is to check terms and conditions on your policy and, if uncertain, the importance of contacting your car hire provider directly to ensure you have all the documentation you need."
A recent survey by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office found that 51% of those questioned didn't know if an IDP was required in the country they were travelling in. The state was accused of quietly introducing the law without alerting travel companies or potential travellers, leaving consumers unaware of whether to purchase an IDP.
Andy added: "An IDP is required in some countries and lasts for 12 months. Travellers can apply for the permit at their local post office. They only cost £5.50 for the year and are easily obtained so if you will be driving abroad we advise travellers to purchase one if uncertain."
