Florida Teachers of Tomorrow Launches General Knowledge Test Preparation
TAMPA, Fla., Dec. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Teachers of Tomorrow announced today that it has added General Knowledge Test preparation to its teacher certification program to help more people transition into the teaching profession. The course is now a part of the full Florida Teacher educator preparation program.
The Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE), including the General Knowledge Test (GK), are required by the state of Florida for people who want to earn a teaching certificate to teach in Florida schools. The test consists of four subtests including an essay, English language skills, reading and mathematics. Recent changes to Florida rules require that teachers pass each of the four subjects in order to become a teacher, reducing the pass rate.
"We heard from our partner school districts and charter schools that many people are struggling to pass all four sections," said Vernon Reaser, CEO of Teachers of Tomorrow. "We created the General Knowledge Test resources to ensure that more people succeed on the test."
In a recent presentation to the Florida State Board of Education, the GK pass rate was only 32% for teachers who were not in a program and 42% for those in a program like Florida Teachers.
The preparation program includes a General Knowledge Test review of the concepts covered on the test. Teachers work with practice test questions aligned with the competencies and skills assessed on the test. The practice test questions provide feedback on each response and a brief explanation to help teachers understand what they might have missed. Two practice essays are also included, considering the essay has one of the lowest pass rates. The essay practice includes a rubric explaining how to improve an essay from failing to passing. The program launched on December 1, 2016.
