The Salt River is one of America's greatest fisheries, offering anglers to the Yellowstone and Jackson area a unique fly fishing experience away from crowds. Visitors can expect to enjoy solitude, as the ranch is open to a limited few each day, giving anglers plenty of space to cast to eager trout.
"You won't see another human in sight," says Head Guide Will Hobbs, "Fly fishing is a way to get away and enjoy the little things in life. At the ranch, we are making sure the details, all those little things, are as bountiful as the fishing."
Jill and Steve Cakebread have spent years restoring the stream banks and feeder creeks to increase trout habitat, and today the waters are home to an astounding variety of trout, including brown trout, the fine-spotted cutthroat, as well as the occasional cutbow and rainbow.
"The river is also home to thousands more lake-run brown trout swimming upriver as part of the fall migration," notes Hobbs. "It's a spectacular sight."
More than just breathtaking nature, The Cakebread Ranch team is proud of the new Fly Shop, with its grand opening set for November, 2012. The shop carries everything from assorted flies, fly boxes, floatants, slip shots, tippets, and leaders to Simms fly-fishing outerwear.
"The shop is really the epicenter for the Salt River. We fish it more than anyone and really try to focus our shop around it. It is unique to the Salt," says Hobbs.
The Cakebread Ranch in Star Valley, Wyoming was founded in 2005 as a multifaceted operation specializing in fly fishing, organic farming, wagyu cattle, and gourmet dining. With over 350 pastoral acres along the Salt River, a select few anglers each day are granted access to its awe-inspiring landscapes and open river under the guidance of Will Hobbs, 2004 Montana Fly Company's Guide of the Year. The ranch strives to be a model of sustainable ranching, farming and operations in Wyoming through restoration and educational programs in the community.
