Folio Fine Wine Partners Adds Bodegas y Vinedos Artadi to Portfolio
Prestigious Rioja-based wine producer now represented in U.S. exclusively by Michael Mondavi family import company.
NAPA, Calif., May 2, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Folio Fine Wine Partners is the new U.S. importer for acclaimed Spanish wine company, Bodegas y Vinedos Artadi. Artadi was established in 1985 by visionary winemaker Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle in Rioja and has since built a reputation as being one of the leading Spanish fine wine producers. Today, the company produces wine in three regions—Rioja Alavesa, Navarra and Alicante—and focuses on a single varietal in each to allow for the ultimate expression of terroir.
"It is an honor to be selected as the U.S. importer by such a prestigious wine producer as Artadi," said David Francke, managing director, Folio Fine Wine Partners. "Since Folio's inception, the goal has been to represent leading family wineries like Artadi from the best growing regions around the world. We believe they will be a great addition to our portfolio."
When Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle founded Artadi, his goal was to cultivate the best possible Tempranillo from higher-altitude vineyards that contained a diverse mix of soil types: chalk, gravel and clay. The Tempranillo from these vineyards result in a balanced wine that has a fresh fruitiness with smooth tannins.
"Over the years, our wines have been very well-received by trade, media and consumers in the U.S.," said Juan Carlos Lopez de la Calle, owner and winemaker, Bodegas y Vinedos Artadi. "We look forward to even more success through our partnership with Michael Mondavi, his family and the Folio team."
Today, Juan Carlos' son, Carlos, is also involved in the family business overseeing winemaking.
Artadi expanded its winemaking operations to Navarra and Alicante. Artadi applies the same single-varietal philosophy to these historical regions. Founded in 1996, the Artazu estate in Navarra focuses on Garnacha. Juan Carlos revived old vineyards and built a modern winemaking facility to produce contemporary wines that retain all the great characteristics of the old vine Garnacha.
Established in 1999 in Alicante, the El Seque focuses primarily on the Monastrell varietal. This region is special because of its Mediterranean climate and historic ties to the Phoenicians and Romans. The El Seque wines are defined by their mature and voluptuous character.
Artadi also produce a high-end Rioja at the family's historic wine estate, Vina El Pison. El Pison is consistently ranked as one of the top wines from Rioja and even received a 100-point rating from Wine Advocate for the 2004 vintage.
Folio Fine Wine Partners is currently importing the following wines from Artadi: Vinas de Gain, Pagos Viejos, Vina El Pison, Artazuri Garnacha, Artazuri Rosado, Santa Cruz de Artazu, Vinedos de El Seque and El Seque.
