According to Mitchell, a number of military moms asked her for the designs. However, the idea for welcome home clothing items didn't gel until she met Julie Chavez, a military mom from Hawaii. Chavez introduced herself to Mitchell at a recent expo for women. She expressed her gratitude that The Tiny Soldier was creating patriotic items for children and her amazement that Mitchell has dedicated her work to soldiers without having any ties to the military. The two women ended up in emotional tears. Chavez and Mitchell talked about how wonderful it would be to have access to clothing items that said "Welcome Home" when Chavez's deployed husband returned soon, and that is how the idea was born.
