Foreign Policy Lists Reinhart and Subramanian Among World's Top 100 Thinkers
WASHINGTON, Nov. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Peterson Institute is pleased to announce that Senior Fellows Carmen Reinhart and Arvind Subramanian have been named among Foreign Policy magazine's Top 100 Thinkers of 2011. Reinhart is honored for "raising the alarm about America's debt burden." Subramanian is recognized for "sounding the alarm on China's economic ascendancy."
"We are extremely proud that Carmen and Arvind have been included on this list of some of the world's most innovative thinkers," said Peterson Institute Director C. Fred Bergsten.
Carmen Reinhart, Dennis Weatherstone Senior Fellow, has been instrumental in informing the understanding of financial crises for over a decade. Her new Institute book, A Decade of Debt, builds on prior research to find that advanced economies will likely experience high levels of debt and a lengthy process of deleveraging. Reinhart, along with coauthor Kenneth Rogoff, recently received the Council on Foreign Relations' Arthur Ross Book Award and the TIAA-CREF Institute's Paul A. Samuelson Award for Outstanding Scholarly Writing on Lifelong Financial Security in praise of their best-selling book, This Time Is Different: Eight Centuries of Financial Folly.
Arvind Subramanian is a Senior Fellow jointly at the Peterson Institute and the Center for Global Development. His critically acclaimed book, Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China's Economic Dominance, focuses on the unconventional view that China will overtake the United States as the dominant global economic power within the next two decades if it has not already done so. Martin Wolf, chief economics correspondent at the Financial Times, describes Eclipse as "a very important contribution to an immensely important subject: essentially nothing short of the future of the world. And I admire much of it. It's brave, it's intelligent, and it's justly and rightly controversial."
Foreign Policy's editors select the Top 100 Thinkers each year to recognize the most influential idea-makers from around the world. Past Top Thinkers include Ben Bernanke, Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, and Barack Obama.
