Forestweb Is Pleased to Announce That Brookfield Timberlands Management LP's ('Brookfield') Third Quarter 2010 Timberlands Research Report Is Now Available
This recently released report examines strategies for maximizing total returns through macroeconomic cycles
LOS ANGELES, Jan. 19, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- The timberlands asset class stands apart from almost all others owing to the fact that growth is independent of macroeconomic and capital market conditions and that this growth, captured as merchantable inventory, does not depreciate over the medium-term. These attributes allow timberlands owners to maximize total return by providing the option to switch between cash yield and capital appreciation across market cycles. This report explores how timberland owners have altered their harvest levels in response to the dramatic decline in U.S. timber demand over the past three years and how these responses can be impacted by how timberland investments are structured. Timberland owners responded to lower demand by reducing harvest levels by approximately 30% between 2008 – 2010 from the 2004 – 2006 highs. However, this response was somewhat tardy, resulting in greater timber pricing volatility than necessary. Strong export demand and lower Canadian lumber imports are also suggested to have been responsible for bringing timber supply and demand into balance.
