Former litigators launch new litigation finance firm Curiam Capital LLC
NEW YORK, Feb. 1, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Former litigators launch new litigation finance firm Curiam Capital LLC in New York. Owen Cyrulnik and Ross Wallin, previously partners with litigation boutique Grais & Ellsworth LLP, known for its successful representation of institutional investors in ground-breaking financial crisis litigation, are co-Managing Principals of the new entity. Together, they will oversee the firm's underwriting, due diligence, and monitoring of the litigation that Curiam evaluates and finances. They will also manage the firm's business development and new business initiatives.
Curiam is launching with up to $100 million of initial funding. The majority external funder of Curiam is Michael Platt. Mr. Platt co-founded and is the CEO of BlueCrest Capital Management, a private investment partnership and formerly one of the world's largest hedge fund managers.
Mr. Wallin says that "Curiam will create a funding option for businesses and law firms that is streamlined, efficient, and offers creative and customized financing terms." Mr. Cyrulnik, the principal architect of Curiam's investment policies, believes that "litigation finance is part of the continuing economic transformation of the legal industry and will allow companies and law firms to pursue strong legal claims without having to divert valuable capital from business operations and growth."
Mr. Cyrulnik and Mr. Wallin previously practiced law together at Cravath, Swaine & Moore, and Mr. Wallin also worked at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Mr. Cyrulnik graduated summa cum laude from Yeshiva University with a B.A. in philosophy, and he received his law degree magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. Mr. Wallin graduated cum laude from Davidson College with a degree in political science, and cum laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where he was a member of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.
