Appendix I – Keynote Speaker Bio:
President Felipe Calderon served as the President of Mexico from 2006 to 2012. While President, he made economic reform a top priority of his administration, implementing policies that catapulted Mexico into a powerful player in the global economy. Despite tumultuous economic times, Mexico has demonstrated astounding economic resilience and growth: it now claims the globe's 13th largest economy, according to the World Bank.
Calderon also served as President of G20, 2012; Secretary of Energy, 2004; General Director, BANOBRAS (Public Works and Infrastructure bank), 2003. In addition, Calderon served PAN (National Action Party): Federal Congressman and Leader of the Parliamentary Group, 2000-2003; was the President of the Party, 1996-99; acted as the Secretary General, 1993-95; served as a Congressman, 1991-94; was a Representative in the Assembly of Mexico City, 1988-91 and a WEF Young Global Leader, 1997.
Under Calderon's presidency, Mexico managed to avoid the pitfalls of the economic recession that has plagued the world: according to the Wall Street Journal, Mexico's unemployment rate has decreased to under 5% - significantly lower than the U.S. rate - and the nation's exports amount to $1 billion each day. Calderon's presidency has seen Mexico thrive to such a degree that the Financial Times dubbed Mexico "China's unlikely challenger", largely because "Mexico has embraced trade and openness like few other countries in the world."
With his experience as an influential policymaker, both in Mexico and on the world stage, President Calderon is in a unique position to assess the transforming world economy. He holds a Bachelor's in Law, Escuela Libre de Derecho; a Master's in Economics, Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México; a Master's in Public Administration and attended the John F Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
Currently, Calderon serves as an Honorary Chairman, Green Growth Action Alliance (WEF); President of Sustainable Human Development Foundation; Angelopoulos Global Public Leaders Fellow, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, 2013.
