Fort Carson Soldier Killed in an Alleged "Suicide by Cop" Incident
Spartan Alliance covers the Burial after receiving grant because the VA would not
WASHINGTON, June 7, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Help came too late for Edwin Fuentes, a young veteran who served as an infantryman in Afghanistan. Fuentes had a 90 percent disability rating for PTSD, and sadly lost his life on May 17th in an apparent suicide by cop incident that took place in Tustin, CA. Fuentes left behind a young wife and a one-year old son.
With the recent loss of her husband, Mrs. Fuentes did not have the means to pay for the burial and his body has been sitting in the County morgue for the past three weeks. His friends and family have gallantly been trying to raise the necessary funds, due to the fact that the Veterans Administration does not cover a combat veteran's funeral.
"This situation is simply unacceptable," said Boone Cutler, spokesperson for the Spartan Alliance. "The real disgrace is that the government is willing to spend the estimated $850,000/year to keep a single infantry soldier in Afghanistan, but does not see fit to spend the $10,000 to bury that same soldier when he or she is no longer on active duty and a tragedy like this occurs. This troubles me deeply."

The Spartan Alliance is a consortium of 501(c)(3) non-profits, organized by the nonprofit Independence Corps whose mission is to provide for veterans severely injured, both physically and mentally, with the tools, therapies and guidance needed to live as independently and productively as possible. The Independence Corps has been a recipient of a "Newman's' Own" grant to military charities for the past two years in a row.
