FP Transitions Expands FP Insights® Platform With Compensation Benchmarking for Advisory Firms
New data goes beyond salary metrics to reveal how ownership, incentives, succession and benefits shape the economics of building an independent advisory firm
LAKE OSWEGO, Ore., Sept. 10, 2026 /PRNewswire/ -- FP Transitions, a leading provider of business valuation, succession planning, M&A services and enterprise growth solutions for financial advisors, today announced the expansion of its FP Insights® Platform with the addition of a new compensation benchmarking capability designed to help independent advisory firm owners make more informed decisions about one of their largest investments: their people.
Instead of a traditional compensation survey or annual salary report, the data examines the different components of compensation, including salary, bonuses, benefits, ownership and profit distributions, and puts them in the context of a firm's broader talent, growth and ownership strategy.
The initial dataset includes 770 advisory firms and 7,292 individual compensation records as of July 28, 2026, across six cohorts, spanning firms with less than $100,000,000 in AUM to firms with over $1BN in AUM. FP Transitions collects data year-round and refreshes findings weekly as additional firms participate.
Early analysis highlights four key themes for advisory firm owners:
1. Ownership can fundamentally change the economics of an advisor's career.
For experienced advisors, the biggest financial opportunity may come from having a stake in the business rather than incremental increases in salary, bonuses or increased payout. One of the paper's clearest findings is that owners can leverage equity opportunities to attract talent in ways above and beyond traditional raises. An advisor's tenure or production doesn't guarantee a spot in the cap table, although positive employee performance could lay the groundwork for a future equity event.
2. More structured incentive plans can clarify performance and reward high performers.
Many advisory firms continue to rely heavily on management discretion when determining bonuses. However, clearly defined performance measures can help employees better understand how performance connects to compensation and advancement. Early data suggests that formulaic bonuses result in a higher total award than those administered largely by gut feel.
3. Succession planning must go beyond identifying the next generation of leaders.
Naming a potential successor is only the beginning. Successful internal succession requires firms to address valuation, financing, timing and the pathway from employee to investor, and ultimately, owner. It's critical to begin ownership and compensation planning within succession conversations long before a transition takes place.
4. Benefits become a more important part of the talent strategy as firms scale.
As advisory businesses grow beyond founder-led practices, their benefits offerings tend to become more robust. Health coverage, retirement programs and other employee benefits increasingly become part of the competitive equation for attracting and retaining talent.
"Compensation benchmarking has traditionally focused on the question, 'What should I pay someone in this role?' We think firm owners should be asking a much broader set of questions," said Brad Bueermann, CEO of FP Transitions. "How are we rewarding performance? When should ownership enter the conversation? What benefits do we need as we grow? Can our best people see an economic future inside this business? Those decisions can have a meaningful impact on the strength and long-term value of the firm."
From Compensation Data to Business Intelligence
The compensation benchmarking feature is the latest addition to FP Insights®, FP Transitions' growing business intelligence platform for independent advisory firms.
It follows the recent introduction of the Estimated Value Index, which gives firm owners a directional view of their financial strength and relative value. Together, the capabilities reflect FP Transitions' broader strategy of turning its extensive advisory-firm data and consulting and valuation experience into practical intelligence firm owners can use before they reach a sale or succession event.
"Compensation is one of the biggest investments an advisory firm makes, but the individual components are often evaluated separately," said Tom Kimberly, Chief Operating Officer of FP Transitions. "FP Insights gives us an opportunity to connect those decisions. Over time, we can bring together compensation, ownership, valuation and other business intelligence to help advisors better understand not only where their firm stands, but the decisions that can help move it forward."
Designed for Firms at Critical Growth Inflection Points
The compensation benchmarking feature is particularly relevant for independent firms confronting first-time business decisions: adding professional staff, formalizing bonus structures, introducing employee benefits, retaining senior advisors' developing G2 leaders or creating an internal path to ownership.
These decisions often arise as a founder-led practice begins evolving into a more durable enterprise and can have lasting implications for profitability, culture, succession and value.
FP Transitions continues to collect compensation data and is encouraging independent advisory firms to participate as it expands the breadth and depth of the platform.
The survey is open to independent advisory firms, registered investment advisors (RIAs) and hybrid practices. Firm staff or managing advisors responsible for compensation decisions are invited to complete the secure survey. Upon completion, participating advisors will receive complimentary access to aggregate compensation benchmarks, proprietary industry insights and a customized Compensation Health Check powered by the FP Insights® platform.
