Frank Beddor's Graphic Novel Hatter M Goes to the People!

Hatter M is part of author Frank Beddor's Looking Glass Wars universe, which offers a unique and edgy take on Alice in Wonderland, and has also given birth to a trilogy of New York Times best selling novels.

But despite his success following traditional publishing models, Beddor believes ventures like Kickstarter are an important part of the current publishing world.

"We're in a new age," said Beddor. "We all have to look for new ways to produce material. And new ways to connect with readers. Kickstarter offers both of those things."

Beddor has joined a long line of top comic industry professionals who've participated in a Kickstarter project. Others include Marc Silvestri, Gail Simone, Paul Jenkins, Steve Niles, Jim Califore, Mike Norton, Ashley Wood, Ben Templesmith, Bill Sienkiewicz, Becky Cloonan, and Felipe Echevarria. And participation of individuals like this was one of the reasons Beddor chose to use Kickstarter.

"Yes, the involvement of my friends and fellow creators did sway my decision," said Beddor. "They proved to me this is a real thing. Something that could get their books to a wider audience."

Wide audiences are nothing new to this former World Champion freestyle skier, a sport from which he retired in 1983 to pursue a career in show business, first as a stunt man, then an actor, and finally a producer. He is probably best known for producing the hit Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller vehicle THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY.

This success gave Beddor the chance to indulge his passion for writing. He spent several years writing the Looking Glass Wars trilogy. It became a hit in both the UK and US, spending 21 weeks on The New York Times Best Seller list. It has also inspired the Hatter M graphic novel series.

But Beddor hasn't given up on his career as a film producer. He's currently in preproduction on THE JULIET for Sony Pictures and New Regency, a near-future science fiction tale based on the classic story "Fondly Fahrenheit" by Alfred Bester. Rupert Sanders (SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN) has signed on to direct, and Brian Koppelman and David Levien (OCEAN'S THIRTEEN) have been hired to rewrite the previous script penned by Henry Bean. Beddor will be partnering on the project with producers Chuck Roven and Alex Gartner of Atlas Entertainment.

Kickstarter, founded in 2009, gives creative people the ability to go directly to the public to fund a wide range of projects, including video games, independent films, music, comics, and more. In exchange for supporting these projects backers are given some tangible "reward" such as signed art, t-shirts, career advice, and so on. All Kickstarter projects are presented publicly on the Kickstarter website.

"Kickstarter is breaking the barriers between readers, publishers and authors," Beddor continued. "Readers can become publishers, choosing what they want to read and the manner in which they want to read it. This is incredibly liberating."

Beddor's Kickstarter campaign began on February 5 and will run until March 22.
