From "House" to Heart: Teleos Leadership Institute Innovates with University of South Florida College of Medicine and Lehigh Valley Health Network to Create a New Program for Medical Students

SELECT is a joint venture between USF College of Medicine in Tampa, FL, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) in Allentown, PA and Teleos Leadership Institute in Philadelphia, PA.  

SELECT prepares medical students to be physician leaders who can accelerate change in health care. The founding principle of SELECT is the concept that students with high emotional intelligence are more likely to develop the skills needed to transform health care and improve the health of communities. In essence: students with higher emotional intelligence can become more engaged, compassionate physicians who work effectively with teams and can lead change in health care organizations.

Teleos Leadership Institute worked with USF and LVHN to create a new assessment process for incoming medical students — one that assessed their emotional intelligence. "This is a way to get underneath people's plug and play responses," says Suzanne Rotondo, executive director at Teleos Leadership Institute. "You get to such depth, such detail, that people can't fake it. For emerging leaders, this is a way to get under the surface and see how someone's mind and heat works."

The students spend their first two years at USF in a student centered environment, and then complete their clinical training at LVHN, a health system renowned for its patient-centered care, and recognized by U.S. News and World report for 16 consecutive years as one of America's Best Hospitals.

Teleos Leadership Institute worked with the new faculty in the SELECT program to create an innovative and person-centered approach to learning and doctoring. In year one, emotional intelligence and leadership introduces key concepts and helps students attain leadership competencies, year two prepares students to work in teams, and in year three and four students apply what they have learned in clinical settings.

While a typical medical program has a clinical supervisor, each SELECT student will have a mentor for their leadership and their growth, as future leaders, as people, as well as being a doctor. The SELECT program participants grow as doctors through relationship with others — something they will be able to pass on to patients, colleagues and future students.
