"Media gateways continue to play a prominent role as long as businesses must support legacy communication platforms and equipment," explained Frost & Sullivan Information and Communication Technologies Industry Analyst Michael Brandenburg. "Meanwhile, the presence of E-SBCs will grow within businesses to integrate and protect the next generation of UC services and platforms."

Both segments serve to mitigate the interface challenges between telephony services and business communication platforms. Nevertheless, as UC platforms and SIP trunking services become more pervasive, the need for enterprise media gateways will dwindle. The future is clearly in end-to-end IP-based communications, displacing legacy telephony systems and interfaces. While this IP-based future would seem to favor E-SBCs, a lack of customer mindshare could stall the segment's growth.

"Moving to IP does not directly imply that businesses will adopt E-SBCs, so E-SBC vendors must educate customers on the importance of deploying their product," advised Brandenburg. "Lack of customer mindshare and product knowledge often leaves VoIP access and SIP trunking customers to rely on their service provider to protect their UC infrastructure from intrusion, while larger enterprises insist on deploying their own hardware-based or increasingly virtual E-SBCs.  Therefore, vendors must gear up to support any on-premises or cloud-based deployment model that customers may require."

Media gateway solution suppliers too should provide standalone, single-purpose product lines to serve the low end of the market. At the same time, they must focus their R&D and investment efforts on multi-service devices and virtualized E-SBCs, where most of the differentiation and new growth opportunities lay. In fact, enabling E-SBCs along with firewall functionalities will add value for customers, as well as extend the lifecycle of media gateway products.
