Frrole - The World's First Online Social-Local Newspaper
Frrole is the world's first social-local newspaper. Using Twitter platform as the underlying data source and using cutting-edge technology in Language Processing, Artificial Intelligence and Spam Reduction areas, Frrole is creating a brand new way for the consumers to serendipitously discover more about their city, their country and the whole wide world.
NEW YORK, June 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Frrole, the Twitter-based "universal news" application, has announced its beta release that provides localized news editions for 50 cities and 5 countries worldwide (see the New York city edition). In doing so, it has become the world's first news source that ties local and social together online with a news offering.
Frrole is attempting to solve many hitherto unsolved problems in the news aggregation space. News aggregators have traditionally taken their input from a few thousand data sources whereas Frrole considers the inputs from millions of individuals and organizations as its source. It also turns this notion of social on its head by looking at universal data streams and not just at what a user's social network is sharing. Amarpreet Kalkat, Frrole's co-creator explains "We want to democratize news. People want to know what is going on in the world beyond their personal graph and mainstream media and that is what Frrole is all about."
Apart from covering 50+ cities, Frrole also supports country specific news editions. The United States edition, for example, is created by aggregating the top news from 33 US cities that Frrole covers. Similar pages exist for 5 more countries, including Australia, Canada, India and United Kingdom.
Technologically, Frrole currently analyzes more than 10 million tweets daily in real-time and selects 0.1% of tweets that its algorithms see as informational. It then organizes the news from these tweets into sections like Sports, Entertainment, Travel etc., just like a traditional news source would do. By putting in place a process that is 90% algorithmic, 5% community controlled and 5% editor controlled, Frrole creates a scalable model for news extraction and consumption that could be used to create localized news sources for cities all over the world.
Frrole has been growing rapidly since its beta release, having grown by almost 2000% since early April. It has been featured on TV programs like New York-based CNYCentral's Digital Download. Technology and Social Media blogs like The Next Web, Lifehacker and The Social Media Examiner have also recommended Frrole, terming it as "the future of social news."
Frrole can currently be accessed via the Web at http://frrole.com and the mobile Web at http://m.frrole.com. Mobile apps with user customization support would be released over the next quarter.
