Definitions
The superfast broadband sector is divided into three main wireline architectures :
• FTTH/B: this architecture stands for Fiber to the Home/Building.
• FTTN+VDSL: includes Fiber to the Node + VDSL and VDSL2 technologies.
• FTTLA stands for Fiber to the Last Amplifier. It corresponds to the architecture based on coaxial networks, where the fiber is deployed until the location of the last amplifier in a coaxial network (the amplifier is then replaced by an opto-electronic component), and where Docsis 3.0 is implemented to improve the performances of the network.
The counting method is as follows:
• Homes Passed represent the premises able to be connected with limited installation among which end users equipment
• Subscribers represent connected homes which have contracted a subscription to a Service provider
The ratio calculation method is as follows:
• The Take up rate measures the part of subscribers among the number of Homes Passed in one country or for one player.
• The coverage rate represents the part of Homes Passed among the total number of households in a country.
Europe here means EU 39: EU 27 + others countries as in particular Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, Israel, Turkey, Ukraine and Russia.
Important to note that in the following slides, we consider only wireline superfast broadband that include FTTx-based architectures. Therefore we do not take into account wireless technologies that could also be considered as superfast solutions too considering the speed rates they can provide (at least 30 Mbps).
