Fueling CA Hosts First-Of-Its-Kind Symposium on California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program
This event brought together leading experts to participate on LCFS program panel discussions critical to the State's economy and environment
SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 19, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Fueling California – www.fuelingcalifornia.org – today hosted a symposium that brought together leading voices from regulatory agencies, industry leaders, environmental organizations, government, alternative energy companies and academia to discuss and educate key stakeholders on California's Low Carbon Fuel Standard Program (LCFS). The symposium provided an overview of the LCFS regulation and where we are today; discussed the realities of the implementation; and the goals of the standard and possible solutions to achieve them.
"As the largest fuel user organization in the state, we felt it was that right time to create a balanced venue where experts on California's LCFS Program can have an open dialogue on a regulation that is critical to both California's economy and environment," said Robert M. Sturtz, Chairman of the Board of Fueling California. "I believe we achieved our symposium's goal to better educate key stakeholders on the impacts and benefits of the LCFS Program from a variety of differing perspectives."
In 2006, the Legislature passed and then- Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 32, the Global Warming Solutions Act of 2006, which set the 2020 greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal into law. It directed the California Air Resources Board (CARB) to begin developing early actions to reduce greenhouse gases while also preparing a scoping plan to identify how best to reach the 2020 limit. The reduction measures to meet the 2020 target were adopted at the start of 2011.
With the LCFS implementation efforts underway, this is a critical time to provide key audiences specific details on the LCFS, as well as create an environment for all key stakeholders, regulators and policy makers to discuss the impacts and benefits of the LCFS Program.
"Today's substantive discussion from the experts* on the LCFS Program showed that we need to work together to achieve balance during CARB's ongoing implementation efforts of the LCFS regulation," said Sturtz. "It's clear that we need to better educate a broader audience on the LCFS Program and seek ongoing solutions that create benefits for both the environment and our economy."
