FUJITSU TEN Launches Development of Vehicle-Mounted Android (TM) Terminal Equipped with Sophisticated Tegra (TM) 2 Mobile Superchip Manufactured by NVIDIA (USA)
-- Sample Display at CES 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show --
KOBE, Japan, Jan. 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- FUJITSU TEN LIMITED is currently developing next-generation vehicle-mounted devices under the three general themes of "linking cars with society", "linking cars with people", and "linking cars with other cars, and cars with infrastructure".
One project is the development of a vehicle-mounted Android (TM)*(1) (equipped with the sophisticated NVIDIA (R) Tegra (TM) 2*(2)(3) mobile superchip) terminal. A current prototype model of this project will be used as a display model in the NVIDIA booth at the 2011 International CES*(4), the world's largest consumer electronics trade show, which will be held from Jan. 6 to 9, 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada (USA).
The exhibition will feature a demonstration of this prototype, which uses the Android (TM) platform, showing how simple and easy it is to use its applications that include navigation (Zenrin DataCom "Its-mo Navi") and media player (YouTube-compatible*(5) Flash (TM) player) functions. The media player operates using Android (TM) 2.2.
< Development Background - Supporting Car Networks >
The growth of informatization utilizing networks is symbolized by the current rapid expansion of the smartphone market both within Japan and abroad. Android (TM) is now a standard platform for providing network connectivity functions, and it provides a simple and easy method for connecting with various content and services. For these reasons, Android (TM) is rapidly being adopted for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet PCs.
In the automobile industry, as next-generation vehicles (such as HV, PHV and EV) become more widespread, it is expected that the networking of cars, including navigation units, will likewise become even more developed. In response to such changes, FUJITSU TEN is meeting the challenge to create and develop new products and systems under the three general themes of "linking cars with society", "linking cars with people", and "linking cars with other cars, and cars with infrastructure".
One of the ways we are meeting the challenge is considering the future adoption of the Android (TM) to improve automobile connectivity, and as such we have created a prototype for a vehicle-mounted Android (TM) terminal. Additionally, we have equipped this prototype with NVIDIA (R) Tegra (TM) 2, a mobile superchip with high processing performance and low power consumption performance.
