Funny golf book by father and son, Psych-Out Golf explains how to play mind games
BOSTON, June 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Psych-Out Golf is the art of playing with an opponent's mind – for fun and profit.
"Other golf books explain how to improve your mental game. Psych-Out Golf explains how to drive your opponent mental," say the father-and-son authors, Todd Domke and Judah Domke.
The book has a funny, yet practical, premise: "Why struggle to shave a few strokes off your score, when it's easier to add ten to your opponent's?"
But it's not about crude tricks, like distracting an opponent during his backswing. (Remember Caddyshack? "Miss it, Noonan!") It's about getting into his mind before the backswing so his own doubts distract him.
Psych-Out Golf offers sly, wry advice: How to plant subversive swing thoughts; using humor as a 15th club; turning strangers into psychological hazards; recommended games for wagering; sharing expert tips that confuse amateurs; suggestions about eating, drinking, smoking, and motorized carts...
"I love Psych-Out Golf," wrote Jonathan Abrahams, former editor of Golf Magazine. "Even if you don't play mind games with an opponent, you need to know how you are affected by teasing, tricks and temptations to improve your own game!"
The authors don't apologize for instructing people on mind games. They say regular guys playing a weekend round do it all the time, so why not be honest about it? They humorously cite other "great rationalizations" -- it's tough love; mischief adds spice; and we shouldn't take comedy out of camaraderie.
Both father and son are avid golfers who spent years researching and testing mind games in golf.
"It's time to move beyond self-improvement. Let's help our opponents lose. They shouldn't have to do it all by themselves."

"Let the mind games begin!" is a slogan on Psych-Out Golf merchandise. Other slogans: "This game is mental," "Try not to think about the pressure," and "Your handicap is me."
