MIAMI, Sept. 11, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Psychiatric Association assesses the state of the nation's mental health annually. This year, more than half the survey respondents indicated they were anxious about global current events (67%); their own and their family's safety (62%); meeting their financial obligations (61%); their health (59%); identity theft (57%); and the impact of climate change (53%).

If you find yourself increasingly anxious, here are five things to try:

1. Deep or box breathing can relieve the physical symptoms of anxiety. For box breathing, inhale for four seconds, hold for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, and hold for another four seconds. Repeat at least 10 times.
   
   
2. Both caffeine and sugar can cause anxiety spikes. Try to limit your intake of both by replacing coffee with herbal teas like chamomile or lemon balm, and sugary cold drinks with water.
   
   
3. Scale back on your use of social media and limit doom scrolling. Remove some (or all) social media apps from your phone and limit the amount of time you spend reading or listening to the news.
   
   
4. Counter anxiety with movement. Even mild exercise releases endorphins and helps to regulate stress hormones. After doing some deep breathing, spend 10 minutes stretching, doing a few simple yoga exercises, or take a 10-minute walk.
