American Veterinary Medical Association calls for more clinical trials of CBD for pets

MIAMI, Sept. 29, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has published an updated report on cannabis and pets, focusing on the benefits of CBD treatments for cats, dogs, and horses. Cannabis in Veterinary Medicine emphasizes the need for controlled clinical trials to help vets understand how CBD can help their patients as well as determine the need for new cannabis-derived products.

The AVMA cites a study that investigated the usefulness of treating dogs with CBD to alleviate the stress of car travel. It found that treating dogs once a day orally with 4 mg/kg of CBD led to decreased cortisol levels, less whining, and less lip licking – all signs of stress in dogs. Dogs treated with the same amount of CBD were significantly less vocal when temporarily separated from their caregivers.

For horses, treatment with CBD can potentially alleviate sensitivity to touch. A young quarter horse mare that had been treated with a variety of drugs and acupuncture for sensitivity to touch in the caudal neck and withers region showed no improvement. But when given 250 mg by mouth twice daily of pure crystalline cannabidiol, she no longer showed any sensitivity after only two days. In 2022, a study published in Equine Veterinary Journal revealed that CB1 and CB2 receptors are present in equine joints, which suggests CBD compounds could help reduce equine joint inflammation and the discomfort of osteoarthritis.

Recent studies indicate cats tolerate CBD well. One study measured creatinine and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels in cats before and after CBD had been administered. Both creatinine and BUN levels decreased significantly within 24 hours, which could mean less invasive treatments for feline kidney disease and urinary crystals.
