Gardein Donates Healthy Meat-Free Entrees to Americans in Need
Gardein will donate thousands of delicious meatless meals to charities in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and D.C. in support of its Meat-Free Summer Challenge—where 6,500 Americans pledged to go meat-free
WASHINGTON, Sept. 14, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Gardein, an award-winning line of meat-free foods, embarked on a four-city U.S. tour this summer to positively influence Americans' eating habits by encouraging residents in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and D.C. to go meat-free one day per week. At the conclusion of the tour, 6,500 Americans signed up for the Gardein Meat-Free Summer Challenge—in turn raising 6,500 healthy meatless entrees for five charities to help feed Americans in need.
"We are in the midst of very challenging times and the need for the food bank and our partner agencies is unprecedented," said Shamia Holloway, communications manager at Capital Area Food Bank. "The generous donation from Gardein will help us ensure that all families, children and seniors have access to nutritious meals. Food is the most basic human right and no one in our community should go hungry."
Kimberly Lyons-Briley, development and volunteer manager at Martha's Table, adds "Martha's Table has seen a drastic increase of need for emergency food in the past couple of years. We are grateful to Gardein, with this meat-free donation they have helped us with our mission of providing healthy meals for our clients."
According to Feeding America, one in six Americans is fighting hunger. Gardein meatless entrees, including Gardein Seven Grain Crispy Tenders and Gardein's Ultimate Beefless Burger, will be delivered to all five charity partners the week of September 19, in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago and D.C.
"We're committed to giving back to the communities where Gardein's meatless foods are sold," says Yves Potvin, CEO of Garden Protein International, maker of Gardein. "We feel good that our meat-free foods will help nourish those most in need this September."
Beneficiaries of Gardein's Meat-Free Summer Challenge include: Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children, www.atlantadayshelter.org; Pine Street Inn, www.pinestreetinn.org, in Boston; Lakeview Pantry, www.lakeviewpantry.org, in Chicago; and Capital Area Food Bank, www.capitalareafoodbank.org, and Martha's Table, www.marthastable.org, in DC.
"Providing healthy meals for the homeless men and women of Boston is an important part of our mission," says Susan Miskell, business operations manager at Pine Street Inn. "We are grateful to Gardein for its generous support and donation of more than 1,000 nutritious meals to our food service program."
Rev. Leslee Samuelson, executive Director of the Atlanta Day Shelter, adds "We are grateful to have Gardein as a food partner for our Critical Needs Program. Last year we served over 68,000 meals to homeless women and children and we are always looking for ways to provide more nutritious lunches. Gardein's donation is a real blessing to us."
Jenny Dwyer, Community Outreach Coordinator at Lakeview Pantry continues, "We serve a large volume of clients and rely heavily on community support like Gardein's food donation. Our clientele is diverse and includes a large portion of folks who request meatless meals. It is important for us to provide healthy food that meets a variety of diets and preferences."
The makers of Gardein have been giving back to communities in the United States and Canada with needed food donations since its inception. "At Gardein, we believe everyone should have access to healthy nutrient-rich meatless meals, and we'll continue to make food donations to North American organizations," adds Potvin.
