RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C., July 21, 2011 /PRNewswire/ - Patheon (TSX: PTI) announced today the appointment of Gary Shope to the newly created position of Chief of Staff, reporting to James C. Mullen, Patheon's Chief Executive Officer. In this role, Gary will become an added resource on critical internal activities related to the company's strategy and its implementation, sites and other real estate, human resources and communications with key internal and external audiences.

Gary served as vice president of economic development for the Research Triangle Foundation for 16 years, the owner and developer of the Research Triangle Park. Prior to his position with the Foundation, he was the Group Manager, Far East Group at the N.C. Department of Commerce. Most recently, Gary was recruited to launch the Riyadh Technology Valley in Saudi Arabia, intended to bring together global corporations, international academic researchers and government leaders to promote the kingdom's technology potential. Gary also worked with Orange County (N.C.) in developing more strategic positioning of the county for new and existing industry clusters and leveraging economic development partnerships with the university community.
Gary earned a Master of public administration from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and he also holds an undergraduate degree from West Virginia Wesleyan College.
