James Conway is a retired United States Marine Corps four-star general who was the 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps. He rose through the ranks, earning distinguished positions along the way. After tours in Lebanon and the Gulf War, he was assigned to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, acting as the Deputy Director of Operations J-3 for Combating Terrorism, and he led I Marine Expeditionary Force during two combat tours in Iraq, with 60,000 troops under his command. In June of 2006, President George W. Bush nominated General Conway to become the 34th Commandant of the Marine Corps, a nomination which the Senate confirmed August 2, 2006.
