General Tools Donates 250 Moisture Meters to the Parish of Baton Rouge to Enable City to offer Free Moisture Inspections to Residents
BATON ROUGE, La., Sept. 26, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- General Tools, a recognized leader in the design and development of precision tools, announced today that 250 moisture meters were recently sent to Baton Rouge, Louisiana to help the local government conduct inspections of the homes ravaged by recent floods.
The moisture meters will help the city's Inspectional Services department provide information to homeowners regarding the level of moisture content in wood and other building materials. The newest model connects wirelessly to iPhone or Android phones and enables users to store measurements, perform simple calculations and organize photos and videos.
"The call from General Tools could not have come at a more opportune time," noted Carey Chauvin, Interim Assistant Chief Administrative Officer who oversees the city's inspections. "Just the other day we were meeting to discuss how we could offer free moisture inspections to homeowners and we didn't have the budget to purchase the necessary tools. This donation will help us to better assist homeowners with their rebuilding efforts in the months ahead."
Using moisture meters to precisely measure water penetration levels during the repair and drying process assures that damaged areas are properly repaired and reinforced. Effective structural drying is a process in itself and moisture meters can also measure the progress of repairs and help to identify and eliminate trapped moisture. The ToolSmart Moisture Meter recently received a 2016 Pro Tool Innovation Award, one of the industry's highest honors.
"We knew we had the technology to help assess the extent of water damage and we are pleased that in a small way, we can do our part to give Baton Rouge homeowners the right information about the extent of water damage their homes have sustained," said Ralph Mallozzi, General Tools' President and CEO.
General Tools also developed an instructional video along with the moisture meter donation to illustrate the proper use of the tool and the ease of documenting results. According to the city, their requests for home inspections has nearly doubled since the flooding and inspectors are now visiting between 500-600 homes/day. This donation will help the city better assist homeowners who plan to rebuild themselves and don't have the money to hire a contractor.
Aside from detecting potential problem areas, moisture meters also serve a role in streamlining the restoration process. The ability to precisely detect water damage and moisture pockets within a surface allows contractors and homeowners to save thousands on repairs. Contractors are able to effectively focus their work in the most at risk and damaged areas by using a meter to locate spots that have the most moisture.
