Georgetown County Chamber of Commerce To Celebrate Opening of the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex
GEORGETOWN, S.C., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- On Saturday, March 20, 2010, the public is invited to the grand opening celebration of the Carroll Ashmore Campbell Marine Complex. The marina, located at the foot of the Sylvan Rosen Bridge along the Sampit River, started as the Sampit River Park Boat Landing project in 1998, but the name was changed to honor the memory the late governor of South Carolina in recognition of his enthusiastic interest in sport fishing, boating and the outdoors. After serving as governor and a subsequent career in Washington, Carroll Campbell and his family made their home at DeBordieu Colony near Georgetown. Governor Campbell died in 2005 at age 65.
The completed project includes 200 car/trailer parking spaces, six boat launch ramps, courtesy docking, restroom facilities and a 4,000 square foot outdoor event facility. The site is almost 20 acres in size.
The new complex will add to the facilities available for sport fishing events. Owing to Georgetown County's coastal location and wealth of rivers, it is an ideal location for a major tournament facility for both fresh and saltwater activities. Georgetown County, long known for its exceptional fishing and hunting opportunities, provides fishing enthusiasts saltwater fishing in the Atlantic for sea bass, snapper, grouper, mackerel and flounder to name a few, and then there's the fresh water fishing in five different rivers for bass, catfish, shad and mullet and more.
The Marine Complex serves another important function in that sport fishing and associated events provide significant economic benefit to host communities, with participants requiring lodging, meals, fuel and other amenities.
In addition to the great fishing and other sports activities, Georgetown County boasts a large number of award-winning golf courses. There's also the pristine beaches, waterways and marshes, fascinating wildlife, significant historic places, intimate dining, unique shops and memorable family activities. Georgetown County is just a short distance from other bustling vacation destinations, conveniently positioned between Charleston and Myrtle Beach.
The inaugural event will feature a boat show, water sports and other family-friendly activities. Admission to the celebration is free, and it will run from 9 am to 5 pm. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at 10 am on Monday, March 22.
