'Girls Only' Creators Take Their Award-Winning Show North and Receive Canadian Accolades - Again
Creators move forward with expansion plans, opening 'Girls Only' in Charlotte, NC, on May 7, 2010
DENVER, April 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The creators of the phenomenon that is Denver's "Girls Only – The Secret Comedy of Women" theater production took the show back to Winnipeg, Canada, for a second successful run. Like its inaugural run in Canada nearly three years ago, "Girls Only" was welcomed with sold-out shows and standing ovations. In three weeks, more than 5,000 women saw the show, which grossed more than $140,000, making it a significant and successful show for the Manitoba Theater Centre.
The success of "Girls Only" in Denver, Des Moines and Winnipeg has given the show the foundation to launch in other cities across the country. The next production begins in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday, May 7. For tickets or more information about the Charlotte production, theater goers should visit www.GirlsOnlyComedy.com.
Creators Barbara Gehring and Linda Klein conceived of "Girls Only" after discovering their teenage diaries and sharing them with each other. Both working actresses agreed the diaries were great material and began writing the show, which is part acted play and part improvisation.
"The best part of this experience is that we've gotten to make a living doing what we love," said Gehring. "Everyone tells you that earning a living as an actor or playwright is tough. The term 'starving artist' comes to mind. But Linda and I knew we wanted to at least try. We're thrilled our try is paying off."
"Girls Only" in Denver started with a successful launch at the Avenue Theater in early 2008. The rave reviews and sold-out shows interested the executive director at Denver Center Attractions. The result was a production partnership that put "Girls Only" at the Galleria Theater at the Denver Center for Performing Arts for yet another successful run. Because of the success of their collaborative partnership with Denver Center Attractions, Gehring and Klein plan to continue expanding the production over the next few years.
