Glen Rix Appointed to Committee on Geological and Geotechnical Engineering
ATLANTA, May 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Glenn Rix, Ph.D., a Principal geotechnical engineer based in Georgia, has been appointed to the National Research Council's (NRC) Committee on Geological and Geotechnical Engineering (COGGE). As a focal point within the Board on Earth Sciences and Resources (BESR), the committee's scope encompasses Earth processes and materials, including the mechanics of rock and soil, and focuses on safe and responsible human development, risk assessment, and mitigation of natural and anthropogenic hazards.
At Geosyntec Consultants Inc. (Geosyntec), Glen specializes in seismic hazard assessment and mitigation for civil infrastructure projects, including dams, power plants, and ports and harbors, at both the component and system scales, as well as advanced near-surface geophysics investigations and interpretations across a range of applications. He specializes in geotechnical earthquake engineering and engineering seismology, seismic hazard assessment and mitigation for civil infrastructure at both the component and system scales, and advanced near-surface geophysical methods for a range of applications. Glen joined Geosyntec after a distinguished 24-year career as a professor in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology with a concentration in geotechnical and earthquake engineering where he authored or co-authored more than 50 refereed publications and delivered more than 70 technical presentations at national and international conferences.
Glen has been instrumental in the development of innovative site characterization tools including surface wave methods that utilize the dispersive nature of Rayleigh waves to determine profiles of shear wave velocity in situ and non-invasively. From 1997 to 2007, he served as the Hazards Program Co-Coordinator of the Mid-America Earthquake Center funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and led the development of earthquake ground motions and liquefaction hazard maps for sites in the New Madrid Seismic Zone. From 2005 to 2011, Glen directed the George E. Brown, Jr. Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) Grand Challenge Project on "Seismic Risk Management for Port Systems" also sponsored by the NSF.
