Tappets, also termed as cam follower or valve lifter, run on the camshaft that is made to move vertically by the action of the rotating cam. These are small member interposed between each camshaft lobe for valve lifting mechanism. The side valves lift upwards where the overhead valves are depressed to lift or open the side valves or vice versa. As the camshaft rotates, each lobe produces both a vertical and a side thrust. In an overhead valve engine, the tappet is fitted in the engine block.
