Summary
Global Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) capacity is poised to see considerable growth over the next nine years, potentially increasing from just over 26 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) in 2017 to about 30.5 mtpa in 2026. Around 14 planned and announced projects are slated to come online in the next nine years, primarily in North America and the Middle East.

In North America, the US has two planned Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) projects, with a total capacity of about 1.6 mtpa by 2017. Capex for these projects is about US$0.1 Billion. Major capacity additions will be from M&G Poliester SA.

In the Middle East, Turkey has three announced Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) projects, expected to start operations with a total capacity of about 0.8 mtpa by 2022. Capital expenditure (capex) for these projects totals US$0.23 Billion over the next nine years. Major capacity additions will be from Sasa Polyester Sanayi AS.

In Asia, China has one planned Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) projects, with a capacity of about 0.4 mtpa over the next nine years and plans to spend around US$30Million. Capacity additions will be from Henan Longyu Coal Chemical Co., Ltd.

In the Former Soviet Union, Russia has three planned and announced Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) projects with capacity of about 1.05 mtpa by 2019. Capex for these projects totals at just over US$0.1 Billion by 2019. United Petrochemicals Company and GrupoPetrotemex, S.A. de C.V. are the top companies accounting for the major capacity additions in Russia. In South America, Venezuela plans to spend around US$80Million and add a capacity of about 0.24 mtpa, expected to come onstream by 2019.

M&G Poliester SA, Sasa Polyester Sanayi AS and Indorama Ventures PCL are the top three companies by planned capacity additions globally over the next nine years. Indorama Ventures PCL, Alfa SAB de CV and GruppoMossi&Ghisolfi are the top global producers of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) with capacities of around 3.9 mtpa, 1.8 mtpa and 1.6 mtpa, respectively, in 2017.
