Globe-athon to End Women's Cancers Launches Full Month of Awareness Events Worldwide During Gynecological Cancer Awareness Month
Premier Soca Artist Alison Hinds Helps Kick-off Global Women's Cancer Awareness Movement from the West Indian American Labor Day Carnival Parade in Brooklyn
NEW YORK, Sept. 3, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Globe-athon to End Women's Cancers today kicks-off a month of women's cancer events worldwide to raise awareness of below the belt cancers. The global gynecological (GYN) cancer movement will launch from Brooklyn, N.Y. at the West Indian American Labor Day Carnival Parade on Sept. 7. As part of the kick-off festivities, renowned Soca performer Alison Hinds will lead the Globe-athon parade float with 300 revelers, which will include gynecologists, oncologists, GYN cancer patients, survivors, United Nations ambassadors and medical students. Throughout September during GYN Cancer Awareness Month, awareness events, screenings and educational seminars will occur across the globe in an effort to increase awareness and ultimately lead to the early detection and prevention of GYN cancers.
Each year, millions of women and their families are impacted by GYN cancers. According to the World Health Organization, they account for 16 percent of the 6.6 million estimated new cancer cases and 14 percent of the 3.5 million cancer deaths each year worldwide. A lack of awareness continues to be the biggest barrier to preventing these silent, yet deadly diseases. In addition, healthcare leaders face challenges such as women's fear or embarrassment to be tested, and limited access to screening and treatment programs, particularly in developing countries. By uniting medical, political and religious leaders with patients and survivors worldwide, Globe-athon strives to build unprecedented awareness of these deadly cancers that will ultimately help save lives.
"We're excited to jump start this year's events in Brooklyn at the West Indian American Labor Day Carnival Parade, where we'll be able to spread essential health information on below the belt cancers to a highly international and diverse audience of thousands of parade onlookers," said Dr. Larry Maxwell, M.D., FACOG, Department Chair of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Inova Fairfax Hospital, and Globe-athon Executive Director. "With GYN cancer rates on the rise, we're in a race against the clock to continue building awareness of these cancers, particularly in developing countries where literacy rates are low and women's health issues are overlooked."
Globe-athon's parade float called "Globe-athon in the Caribbean: Women Around the World United to Take Care Down There," will feature participants from the Caribbean Islands and countries worldwide who will hand out important GYN cancer education information to the crowd. Ms. Hinds will perform on the float, alongside DJ D-LIFE of Irie Jam Radio 93.5 FM, and Calypsonian Mikey Mercer. Ms. Hinds has worked closely with Globe-athon to raise awareness of GYN cancers in the Caribbean over the past three years. Additionally during the parade, the Honorable Eric Adams, Brooklyn Borough President, will give a proclamation to help further awareness on the importance of GYN cancer education. To register to participate in Globe-athon's float and receive a FREE "Mas" costume, visit www.globeathon.com.
Globe-athon awareness events will continue in Brooklyn at the House of the Lord Church later in the month. At that time, Globe-athon will host Health Care Symposiums on Women's Cancers Below the Belt for men on Sept. 25 and for women on Sept. 26. Led by local GYN oncologists, these symposiums will provide information about GYN cancers and offer free screening tests to all women. For more information please email [email protected].
Globe-athon is the only international movement focused on raising awareness and educating women about the prevention, early detection and treatment of all GYN cancers. The movement is supported by international gynecologists, GYN oncologists and doctors, as well as GYN cancer survivors. During its second year in 2014, more than 200 cities in 70 countries hosted Globe-athon awareness and screening events.
