Gold Star Foods Leading the Way on Food Safety
Significant Achievement in Simultaneously Meeting Nationally Recognized Food Safety Certifications
ONTARIO, Calif., July 7, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Gold Star Foods Inc. (Gold Star) today announced it is one of the first school food distribution companies to achieve a food safety certification that's beyond industry standard. After a rigorous evaluation process, Gold Star is now certified in meeting both the Food Safety Modernization Act and Safe Quality Food Program (SQF Level II) – a significant achievement.
"At Gold Star, we've made it our mission to build a culture of food safety in the school food service supply chain using scientific-based best practices," said Sean Leer, CEO of Gold Star Foods. "We are very proud to go beyond industry standard and especially proud to meet both standards concurrently."
While the Food Safety Modernization Act is designed to ensure the U.S. food supply is safe by shifting the focus from responding to contamination to preventing it, the Safe Quality Food Program is a voluntary certification that goes beyond the Food Safety Modernization Act to certify that food has been produced, processed and handled according to the highest standards. The Safe Quality Food Program is recognized around the world as the gold standard in food safety management – with a stamp of approval from the Global Food Safety Initiative.
Leer notes, "The achievement of dual certification is an important step in building on the collaboration between manufacturers, local producers and school food service professionals to provide wholesome, locally-grown, and safe foods to school food service operations."
Gold Star's commitment to bringing the strategically sourced movement to schools has created a framework to ensure that the foods on our school lunch trays are healthy, fresh and safe. Therefore, all of Gold Star's locally sourced products come from farms that undergo a certification process to ensure the highest-quality, freshest and safest products available. Gold Star is proud to serve as a foremost leader in food safety among the school food distribution industry and looks forward to continuing to achieve the highest standards while providing fresh, wholesome and safe foods each and every day.
