Golden Door Donates $75,000 To Keep Doors Open At Forensic Health Services In North County
SAN MARCOS, Calif., May 27, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- The Golden Door Foundation announced today that it has made a $75,000 unrestricted contribution to support the vital work of Forensic Health Services of Escondido. Forensic Health Services is the critical first step for child victims of abuse or molestation, as well as adult victims of sexual assault, to help law enforcement gather evidence for criminal prosecution.
"It is our privilege to support the work of the Forensic Health Services. The center is providing a critical service to children and adults who need every opportunity for physical, mental and emotional health support from our community, and the Golden Door is doing our part to help," said Kathy Van Ness, General Manager of Golden Door Resort.
North County law enforcement officials bring victims to the center to begin the investigation of child abuse and sexual assault. Trained staff is available 24-hours a day to provide medical services for children and adults who have experienced sexual or physical abuse, working closely with local investigative and prosecutorial agencies to provide complete state of the art assessments that may be used in court later.
"The caring staff of Forensic Health Services are experts who help victims through the profound trauma of sexual abuse and violence with great sensitivity. We can't eliminate the scars of abuse, but we can help the people who can help them heal faster," said Van Ness. The Golden Door Foundation was founded in 2013 to show support to improving communities, both globally and locally.
Forensic Health Services is funded by fees charged to law enforcement agencies for services, as well as private contributions. It faced closure earlier this year when the Palomar Health district cut its longtime donation. San Diego County Supervisor Dave Roberts, San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore, and other leaders have stepped up to support the center and partner with private donors to keep the program operating.
"The center is a critical component of law enforcement's process in gathering evidence, ensuring that child and adult victims in our community have the support they need through the investigation and beyond," said Sheriff Bill Gore. "Our Sheriff's Deputies count on this resource to be available 24/7, and we truly appreciate the support of The Golden Door in maintaining this valuable program. With law enforcement participation and private donors coming together, the Forensic Health Services team can continue to do the great work that our community needs."
Since the Forensic Health Services center opened 28 years ago in Escondido, more than 15,000 people have been interviewed at the site. It is the only service of its kind in North County, and only one of two in San Diego accredited for children.
"Thank you to the Golden Door Foundation for stepping up and helping victims of sexual assault and child abuse. Their generosity will help to save the forensic center," said Supervisor Dave Roberts. "I am enormously grateful to the Golden Door for its efforts to improve the health and well-being of North County residents through this donation. This is a great example of genuine community engagement and partnership."
