Entrepreneur and photographer Allison Carenza (http://www.allisoncarenza.com/) conceived the idea for the Looky Loo Light in her own studio, where she specializes in portraiture, from maternity to seniors to infants. "I just kept thinking there's gotta be a better way to get kids to focus on the camera."

Every photographer of infants and young children knows how difficult it can be to get "that" shot. Parents and guardians are paying for keepsake images with the child looking directly into the camera, but that's easier said than done. The typical approach is to use some kind of squeaky toy to attract the child's attention, but this stimulus wears off quickly. The more fidgety youngsters may not respond at all.

"With young children you really only get a good 20 minutes in a photo session - making the most of those minutes has always been a challenge. The Looky Loo Light keeps my hands free, keeps the child focused on the camera itself, and results in a much more natural expression," explained Carenza. "Gone are the days of frustrating shoots where camera-shy kids are looking anywhere but the camera; the Looky Loo light helps even the most distracted kids focus. Now, it's just me, the camera and the child. I'm able to connect with my subjects even better."

A problem-solver by nature, Carenza wanted a solution that was both convenient and effective, delivering superior results to the squeaky toy. She hit upon technology as a way to integrate the distraction device with the camera, which would keep both of her hands free to take those priceless, indelible photographs. The device features multi-colored, low-light LEDs that adapt to fit the lens of any SLR camera. Three on-board patterns add variety to the light and sound effects.

Even before the production model was finalized, the Looky Loo Light had already achieved a measure of success. Last July, Carenza presented the technology on Dream Big America, a national live, syndicated radio show that invites listeners to vote for their favorite startup business. When the votes were tallied, the Looky Loo Light had edged out its opponents. The Dream Big America prize package is valued at over $19,000 in money and services that have helped further refine the Looky Loo Light.

Launching the Kickstarter project is the next step forward. The goal for the Looky Loo Light team is to move out of the prototype phase and enter full-scale production.
