Government of Canada supports Aboriginal participation in exploring energy solutions - Project examines opportunities related to the supply of affordable energy to Yukon

WHITEHORSE, Nov. 7, 2013 /CNW/ - Ryan Leef, Member of Parliament for Yukon, on behalf of the Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of the Environment, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council, today announced an investment that will support First Nations to identify economic and business opportunities associated with supplying natural gas to the Yukon.

"Our Government recognizes that responsible resource development in the North has the potential to create training, employment and business opportunities," said Yukon Member of Parliament, Ryan Leef. "We are committed to working with our territorial and First Nation partners to help build a sustainable and diversified economy that will benefit Northerners and all Canadians."

Government of Canada's investment of $1 million over two years will support Dempster Energy Services (DES) to develop industry partnerships and research the costs of displacing diesel generation by supplying natural gas to the Yukon and potentially transitioning to a local gas supply if one is developed in Yukon. With contributions from First Nations partners, this project represents an investment of up to $1.5 million. The project builds on previous research and readiness planning activities to provide clear direction on how the region can maximize opportunities to provide natural gas to Yukon communities and mining operations.

Development of an affordable and stable supply of natural gas to the Territory will reduce the amount of diesel fuel imported into Yukon to generate electricity. It could also lead to the supply of heat and electrical power to residents of the Yukon.

Dempster Energy Services (DES) is a 100% First Nation owned business that has been established through three participating First Nation business arms with the common goal of developing business and economic opportunities for their respective citizens. DES is comprised of the Na-Cho Nyak Dun Development Corporation, Chief Isaac Inc. and Vuntut Gwitchin Limited Partnership.

Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Strategic Investments in Northern Economic Development (SINED) program, which focuses on long-term economic growth, economic diversification and capacity building across the North. SINED is one of several economic development programs within CanNor. CanNor works to help develop a diversified, sustainable, and dynamic economy across Canada's three territories. CanNor delivers on its northern mandate through funding programs, the Northern Projects Management Office which supports responsible resource development across the North, and by undertaking policy and research.
