Governor Corbett Praises NRG Decision to Keep Open New Castle Electric Generation Facility
Availability of Natural Gas Helping to Save 40 jobs; Create 50-100 New Jobs
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Governor Tom Corbett issued the following statement in response to the announcement by NRG Energy that the company will convert its electric generation facility in New Castle, Lawrence County to operate on natural gas. The facility's former owner, Gen-On Energy Inc., announced last year that it would close the 330-megawatt facility in April 2015 because of costly federal environmental control requirements.
"I am very pleased that NRG Energy committed to re-examining the decision to close the New Castle power facility," Corbett said. "The ability to use affordable and abundant natural gas, while meeting new emission standards, was a key factor in helping to retain the jobs of 40 employees who faced an uncertain future. Additionally, this conversion will help to create 50 to 100 temporary new construction jobs.
"I am appreciative of NRG Energy's CEO David Crane and his team for their commitment to Pennsylvania families and workers. This announcement demonstrates the positive impact safe and responsible natural gas development is having on Pennsylvania's economy."
