Grammy Award winner Mark S. Doss returns to Teatro Regio di Torino to star in The Flying Dutchman and Carmen

International opera star gives Turin audiences a spectrum of exciting performances with both signature and career debut roles

TURIN, Italy, Oct. 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ - International opera star and Grammy Award winner Mark S. Doss proudly announces his return to the Teatro Regio di Torino to perform lead roles in the upcoming globally celebrated productions of The Flying Dutchman and Carmen.  Mr. Doss will take to the stage as the Dutchman in The Flying Dutchman - a first in his career - on October 12, 14, 16, 19 and 21, 2012, and as Escamillo in Carmen, one of his most acclaimed signature roles, on November 13, 15, 18, 21, 23 and 25, 2012.

Wagner's The Flying Dutchman features the Dutchman, a sea captain condemned by the devil to sail for eternity until he finds a woman who loves him enough to die for him. Senta, the daughter of the sea captain named Daland, has lived her entire life dreaming of the man whose redemption she is meant to bring about.

Set in Seville, Spain during the mid-nineteenth century, Georges Bizet's opera Carmen tells the tale of the downfall of Don Jose, a soldier who is seduced by the wily and fiery gypsy Carmen, only to lose her to Escamillo, a glamorous bull fighter.

In addition to being one of Mr. Doss' signature roles, Escamillo has the distinction of being the role he has performed the most - over 125 times.  In 1991, Mr. Doss played Escamillo for the first time at Lyric Opera of Chicago with the extremely talented conductor, Antonio Pappano.  More recently, the bass-baritone performed the toreador in his debut at the Arena di Verona in 2010, and it was also his debut role at the legendary Teatre alla Scala in Milan during the 2003-2004 season.

Following his work at Teatro Regio di Torino, Mr. Doss will return to Chicago as the bass soloist in Handel's Do-It-Yourself Messiah, one of Chicago's most beloved holiday traditions (Dec. 2012), and later a double bill performance at Seville's Teatro de La Maestranza in the productions of Sarka and Cavalleria Rusticana, in the roles of Premysl and Alfio (Feb. 2013). Additional upcoming performances include the role of Amonasro in Aida at the San Diego Opera (April 2013), and The Four Villains in Offenbach's The Tales of Hoffmann with Opera Tokyo (Nov./Dec. 2013).

Mr. Doss has received significant media coverage in connection to his recent performances. In the last year alone, he has made guest TV appearances on ABC, NBC, FOX, CBC's George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight and Toronto News at Six, and OMNI. He has also been interviewed on The New Classical 96.3 FM and several public radio stations, profiled by The National Post and Sway Magazine, and provided expert comments for The Toronto Star, among other notable media credentials. Mr. Doss was also named the recipient of Plant Africa's Entertainment Award for 2011.
