Lawyers for Learning is a not-for-profit corporation that matches volunteers with students at Buffalo Public School 18. The volunteers are judges, lawyers, law students, court clerks, and paralegals drawn from the legal community in and around Buffalo, New York. School 18, a public school for grades pre-K through 8, is located in the West Side neighborhood of Buffalo and has one of the highest rates of poverty among Buffalo Public Schools. Volunteers tutor and mentor one or two academically at risk and/or financially disadvantaged students in order to improve their academic performance, build self-esteem, and increase self-confidence.
The May 17 event at AMF Thruway Lanes in Cheektowaga, N.Y., featured nearly 300 bowlers. GPO fielded two teams and was a lane sponsor in its first year of participation.
"It's an honor for GPO to support Lawyers for Learning," said Gross Polowy Orlans Managing Partner Amy Polowy. "The academic assistance is very valuable, but these children also need to hear from a variety of adults in their lives so they can be successful. GPO is committed to supporting the community where we live and work. Giving back is a privilege."
Jason Desiderio, Amy Rohe-Kipp, Doug Weinert, Kelly Cosentino, Melissa Bundt, Dan Savage, Laura Strauss, Ehret Van Horn, Steven Rosenfeld and Scott Vadnais made up Gross Polowy Orlans' bowling teams.
