Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)/CIDP Foundation International completes another successful Symposium and Releases a new Professional Publication

NARBERTH, Pa., Nov. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The GBS/CIDP Foundation International, based in Narberth, Pennsylvania, is a patient run non-profit organization for the support of those struck with these rare paralyzing disorders of the nervous system. Our 12th symposium, held in Fort Worth, Texas on Oct. 26-28, 2012, was, as in the past, a great success. Four hundred attendees, both patients, loved ones and professionals from 3 continents received the latest information from a series of interactive presentations. Subjects covered included all aspects of these disorders, from diagnosis, to treatment to emotional issues and advocacy. Highlights included a special physicians' session, with expert input on nuances of early diagnosis, optimal treatments and use of clinical findings to predict outcomes. As in the past, an "Ask the Experts" panel provided attendees with an opportunity to obtain expert opinions on a myriad of concerns. The Foundation is proud to include on its Medical Advisory Board some of the world's leading researchers and clinicians. Likewise we proudly support cutting edge research and the Benson Fellowship to advance study of the inflammatory neuropathies. The location for our next symposium, in 2014, will be announced soon.

New publication released. The Ft. Worth Symposium afforded the release of our latest publication, a new pamphlet, 'GBS: An Acute Care Guide for Medical Professionals', authored by Joel Steinberg, MD, PhD.  The guide provides a comprehensive summary of the mainstays of treatment for newly diagnosed GBS patients. A one page summary version (2 sided) is also available for rapid reference use in monitored hospital nursing units such as the ICU. Dr. Steinberg, a hospitalist and former GBS patient, is vice-president of the Foundation and a member of our medical advisory board. We are pleased to provide this new addition to our unique library of publications, for the lay and professional communities. The Foundation provides support, education, research and advocacy in all matters that affect patients with acute and chronic or recurrent inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies (CIDP) and multifocal motor neuropathy (MMN).
