SAYRE, Pa., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Guthrie Health cardiac experts recently presented at the largest international medical meeting in China -- the Budd-Chiari Syndrome and Wang ZG's Vascular Symposium. The goal of the meeting was to explore advances in vascular and endovascular science and technology.
"The Chinese medical community recognizes our expertise in providing state-of-the-art cardiac care at a rural medical center," says Robert A. Larson, MD, Chief, Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and Co-Director, Guthrie Aortic Center. "At the meeting we presented information detailing the benefits to patients of our new hybrid endovascular operating room."
In addition to the meeting, Larson presented Grand Rounds at Xuanwu Hospital, the Second Artillery Corps General Hospital in Beijing, and at the Chang An Hospital in Xi'an. Another Guthrie Health physician, Xiu-Jie Wang, MD, spoke about Median Arcuate Ligament Syndrome at the meeting.
Guthrie Health's state-of-the-art hybrid endovascular operating room enables physicians to perform endovascular procedures, minimally invasive surgery, or traditional open surgery on the same patient, at the same time, in the same room. Guthrie has some of the country's only surgeons trained to do both interventional and surgical heart procedures. Guthrie cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, and vascular surgeons work together to provide patients with comprehensive cardiac care, and ensure that patients receive the most advanced treatments known to medicine.
"The sophistication of the imaging technology opens up new surgical capabilities. For example, if while doing a diagnostic procedure we find that a blood vessel has more blockages than expected, we can quickly switch to a minimally invasive or open surgery approach. This leads to quicker recoveries and shorter hospitalizations for patients. In this case, a patient would only undergo one procedure instead of two," says Larson. "Additionally, the high-definition imaging technologies in this unique OR make it possible for us to perform more intricate surgeries."
