HANIA New York Announces Continued Dedication To Sustainability As Updates To The Global Fashion Agenda 2020 Commitment Are Released
"HANIA REPURPOSED" Will Disassemble Garments to Be Turned into Hats and Donated to Local Children's and Cancer Charities
NEW YORK, May 9, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- HANIA New York announced today its timely support to the Global Fashion Agenda's 2020 Commitment as the company continues to embrace sustainability and circularity as core brand tenants. Delivering on its promise to work towards the highest level of sustainable luxury, HANIA New York is dedicated to offering one-of-a-kind knitwear that is ethically produced and created to last a lifetime.
HANIA New York believes in participating in the global discussion on the importance of sustainability in the fashion industry and that it is the company's responsibility to ensure that they are part of the solution and not contributing to a growing global problem. Currently, two thirds of the world's clothing is discarded, ending up in landfills or being incinerated, causing increasing CO2 emissions, overcrowded landfills and depletion of natural resources at an alarming rate.
To this end HANIA New York has formally adopted a Circular Design model, focusing on minimizing waste, product life extension and recycling. As much as possible, HANIA New York knitwear is designed to be easily repaired, or disassembled to be remade. Repairs are guaranteed during the life of the garment and in a new initiative for 2019, the company is launching its "HANIA Repurposed Program" which will take unwanted HANIA pieces disassemble the garments and re knit them into hats to be donated to local children's and cancer charities.
"I am proud to commit to principles I have been living by my whole life," said Anya Cole, Founder and Designer, HANIA New York. "Growing up, under Communism if I needed something I made it. Nothing went to waste, so I was practicing sustainability out of necessity."
This mindset of not wasting anything has carried over to the company she founded in 2012. All scraps and ends that are left from each hand knit piece are kept in the studio and used for repairs, making hangtags and sometimes even tied together and used to create one off pieces.
HANIA New York became a signatory of the commitment in early 2018 and have recently reported on, and updated their initial goals.
- All new collections must first incorporate existing stocks by making use of at least 80% of them.
- 90% of HANIA New York's collection will be designed for reparability.
- At least 60% of the collection will be made from mono fibers.
- 85% of the collection will be designed for disassembly. Exceeding our previously published goal of 70%.
- Full details on care, reparability, and reuse will be available to consumers via HANIA New York's website and garment tags to clearly indicate how to prolong and extend a products "life."
- An online garment collection program will commence, through which all of HANIA New York products may be returned to be remade, or repurposed.
- All HANIA New York designers will be trained on sustainable and circular design principles.
By becoming a signatory to the GFA 2020 Commitment HANIA New York takes a vital step towards creating a more sustainable luxury product, and embracing a zero waste production model.
"HANIA New York believes the sustainability of the future of fashion might just require looking back to how clothing was made, taking care and time," adds Julie Conroy, Executive Director of Branding and Sustainability, HANIA New York. "Our commitment to being in Copenhagen at this important event showcases our promise to circular design."
HANIA New York has vowed to commit to circular design while offering the highest level of craftsmanship. In addition, continued education to the consumer on proper care, repair and end use options will help to keep their clothing out of the landfill and protect our environment for future generations.
