Hans Blix and Jan Egeland to Attend Peace & Security Summit in Stockholm 28-31 May 2013

STOCKHOLM, April 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ --

Hans Blix, former head of the UN's Weapons Inspection Commission in Iraq, and Jan Egeland, European Director of Human Rights Watch, will be the main speakers at the World Veterans Federation's Peace & Security Summit in Stockholm in May. The theme for the summit is "How can veterans contribute to peace and security in society?".

Hans Blix has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as a diplomat and politician and is well known for his work within the UN, among other things as head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and as head of the UN's Weapons Inspection Commission. Jan Egeland is a Norwegian diplomat and European Director of the human rights organisation Human Rights Watch and has worked internationally for over 30 years within the areas of humanitarian aid, crisis and conflict resolution and human rights.

Veterans are also a major resource in society

Blix and Egeland will contribute their unique and long-standing experiences of peacekeeping and humanitarian measures to the summit's theme and primary point of focus: "How can veterans contribute to peace and security in society?".

About the Swedish Veterans Federation and the Peace & Security Summit 2013
The Swedish Veterans Federation, SVF, is Sweden's representative in the World Veterans Federation, WVF, which represents around 42 million veterans throughout the entire world. SVF has been requested by WVF to arrange the "Peace & Security Summit 2013" in Stockholm in May 2013. The summit is being arranged with support from the Swedish Armed Forces, the Swedish National Police Board and the Folke Bernadotte Academy, among others.

The Swedish Veterans Federation is an organisation that exists for all Swedish veterans. A veteran is a person who has participated internationally in peacekeeping or humanitarian measures. It could be a fireman who has provided assistance after an earthquake on assignment of the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, a police officer who has worked overseas on behalf of the Swedish Police, or a soldier who has undertaken UN service. The common element is that they have all performed a service when the international community has called for measures to maintain peace in the world.
